The end of Mxit is officially here

South Africans are witnessing the end of an era while millennials say goodbye to a high school icon – with the messaging app Mxit announcing its official closure.

According to users on social media, Mxit sent out a notification to its active users.

"After 10 years, Mxit will close on 30 September. Please save all your info and pics on your phone, and use all your Moola before then," the message said.

The company also thanked everyone who had been a part of the Mxit journey.

The announcement prompted #MxitDays to start trending on Friday last week, with users reminiscing about their Mxit memories.

The messaging platform was one of the first popular ways to message using phones without having to resort to SMS or MMS.

It's unclear how many users still used Mxit as of September, but it has long been dethroned by apps like Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger.

However, in 2015 there were 2.7-million users – a loss of 2.2 million users from the previous year.
