UPDATE: NEC to recall Zuma

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 11:15 13-02-2018

After a lengthy meeting of nearly 13 hours, the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has reportedly made the decision to recall President Jacob Zuma from the Union Buildings.

President Zuma’s fate was under discussion during the meeting, which started Monday afternoon at 2pm in Irene and carried on until the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to reports, Cyril Ramaphosa and ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule left the venue around midnight to meet with Zuma and convey the message from the NEC   ̶   that Zuma must resign within 48 hours or face being recalled by the party.

According to Eye Witness News, when Ramaphosa and Magashule informed Zuma of the decision he had reportedly told them “to do what they want to do”.

Ramaphosa and Magashule spent less than an hour with Zuma before returning to the meeting where, reports say, the final decision was made to recall Zuma.

This will be done by invoking Section of the party’s constitution, which deals with the recall of the president.

Ramaphosa has been put forward as the preferred candidate to be sworn in as president.

Despite reports, the ANC has not confirmed the news surrounding the decision to recall Zuma.

The formal announcement on Zuma’s decision and the way forward was expected to be made by the NEC at 12pm at Luthuli House on Tuesday but has now been moved to 2pm

Reports say Zuma has already refused to go willingly.

In the meantime, opposition parties have given National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete until 10 am on Tuesday to respond to the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) request for a motion of no confidence against President Zuma to take place this week.

Opposition parties will also in the same sitting move to have Parliament dissolved according to Section 50 that will, if successful, require early elections to take place within 90 days.

The EFF’s Julius Malema said: “The problem is not Zuma, the problem is not Cyril, the problem is the ANC. So the ANC must be voted out and the people of South Africa are now given an opportunity to choose properly.”
