ANC confirms Jacob Zuma recall, but no deadline set

ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule announced, during a media briefing at Luthuli House on Tuesday afternoon, that the ANC’s National Executive Committee had taken the decision to recall Presidnet Jacob Zuma as President of the country.

According to Magashule, the decision was made in collaboration between Zuma and ANC and the only point on which they could not agree was the time period.

Zuma had reportedly asked for three months to ensure a peaceful handover of power.

Despite confirming that the decision to recall President Zuma is final, no deadline was given to President Zuma as to when he is required to step down.

Magashule simply said they expected the President to respond by tomorrow.

During the briefing ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa was put forward as the NEC’s preferred candidate to step up as president of South Africa.

“The president of the ANC must become the candidate for the presidency of the country. It’s obvious that we want Comrade Cyril Ramaphosa [...],” Magashule said.

He also said that Ramphosa would deliver the state of the nation address (Sona) "if Sona has to be there".

Magashule, asked about his known support of Zuma in the past, said it was expected of all members of the ANC to support their leaders and added: “I supported him because he was the president of the ANC.”

During the briefing, Magashule said no discussions around the proposed motion of no-confidence against President Zuma took place. He also did not confirm when or even if Sona would in fact take place saying that it was not a "constitutional legal requirement that much".
