Police declare #ZumaMustGo illegal

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 14:45 12-02-2018

A march calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down, which is set to take place later today at the Union Buildings, has been declared illegal.

Tshwane Metro Police Department said formal applications from allies of the African National Congress for the march were submitted, however, permission could not be granted.

“In respect of this march, the TMPD could not approve the march, as certain requirements of the Regulation of Gatherings Act 205 could not be submitted in due time,” said spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

Mahamba said that should #ZumaMustGo march proceed, it “will be regarded as an illegal activity”.

“TMPD officers will be deployed to monitor the march, and all affected streets. Some of the major routes coming to Tshwane may also be affected.”

The leader and organiser of the #ZumaMustGo march Lazarus Maumela said the march is being led by “concerned ANC members who are at the forefront because they love their movement”.

“We love our organisation. Even if it means that we are [going to be] arrested, or beaten, or killed – we are ready for it tomorrow [Monday]. And we are not going to leave the Union Buildings, by the way, until he resigns,” Maumela said.

Maumela added that they were not apologetic nor were they afraid of the consequences.

“We cannot be defeated by a group of thugs … tsotsis … people whose intention is to corrupt this organisation. We are not afraid, even if the BLF come, we are ready. If they come with firearms, we will beat them physically.”

The ANC and SACP in Gauteng have distanced themselves from the march and have called the group’s efforts reckless and irresponsible.

The ruling party’s regional spokesperson Jolidee Matongo has called on its members to ignore requests to join the march.

According to ANC Gauteng's Motaletale Modiba, the party is still behind the national executive committee and trusts it will resolve the issue of the removal of Zuma from office.

“We’ve full confidence in the ability of the ANC national executive committee and the national officer barriers to resolve the current leadership issue decisively.”

Modiba also said the ANC provincial leadership has called for the ANC membership of participating individuals to be verified in order institute immediate disciplinary actions against them.

The #ZumaMustGo march proceedings are set to start at around 12:00.
