Maimane calls for “fresh leadership” in Cape Town

It is time for a change in leadership in the City of Cape Town.

This is the message Democratic Alliance (DA) Mmusi Maimane emphasised at a briefing in Cape Town on Monday morning on the outcome of the party’s federal council meeting that took place this past weekend.

“While the situation is unprecedented and painful to all in the DA, the time has come for a fresh leadership team in the city to take that caucus forward and restore the faith of the public in what has been the crown jewel of DA governments until recently.

"The public has our commitment that we will do what is right and what is in the best interests of the voters, no matter how tough it is. Unlike our opponents, we will not sweep under the carpet difficult or embarrassing issues, and we will act to uphold integrity and the faith of the public,” said Maimane, adding that they would hold themselves to the same standards they expect of the ANC.

In addition to the need for the “fresh leadership team” Maimane stated that the motion of no confidence against Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille would go ahead as scheduled on Thursday.

The DA leader felt it was important that the matter was settled soon so that the party can move on and focus on governing the city.

De Lille has been under fire after she was accused of bribery and corruption. Most recently, she was accused of trying to solicit a R5-million bribe from businessman Anthony Faul back in 2012.

The bribe was reportedly to be exchanged for her endorsement of the businessman’s fire extinguishers, which he had intended on rolling out in the informal settlements.

De Lille denies all allegations and says she is being unfairly treated. The mayor has also said she would give her full cooperation in any investigation against her.

Other reasons the DA is pushing for de Lille’s removal include allegations of negligence surrounding the water crisis, an improper appointment, a failure to exercise her duties as mayor, and underreported irregularities.
