With a few days to go before the African National Congress’ (ANC) elective conference, the party is calling on delegates not be influenced by money to change the mandate of their branches.

The race to the conference has now entered what analysts describe as a “crucial period” where money can be used to win over delegates.

The race is now between Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa.

Branches have nominated their preferred candidates for the party’s leadership, but they will have to trust that the delegates they send to conference vote according to their nomination and mandate.

Vote buying is a reality for the ANC. It’s happened previously but the party’s spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says they want to do away with this phenomenon this time around.

“The influence of money, vote buying and so on … we want to make sure we deal with these issues. Money should never change the mandate of a branch.”

He says the party is currently verifying that all branches that sat through the provincial general councils, which nominated leaders, were constitutionally convened.

He also says the ANC is confident that several court cases facing the party won’t have a bearing on the elective conference.
