Herron to file suit against ANC for defamation

Updated: 08:15 05-12-2017

The City of Cape Town’s mayco member for Transport Brett Herron says he plans on taking legal steps against the African National Congress (ANC) for defamation.

Herron insists he’s not involved in any tender corruption within the city’s transport authority over which he has political oversight.

On Tuesday the city council is expected to consider whether to suspend transport authority head Melissa Whitehead and city manager Achmat Ebrahim in light of explosive corruption allegations levelled against them by the executive director in Mayor Patricia de Lille’s office.

The ANC alleges Herron was part of a plan to smooth the way for a Chinese bus company to obtain a contract to supply the city with electric buses.

Herron has dismissed the claims.

He says they met with numerous bus manufacturers long before a tender was issued, on a fact-finding mission.

“In the South African context, allegations of corruption are very serious and very damaging to anyone’s reputation and I don’t think allegations of corruption should be made frivolously or recklessly for quick political gains.”

Herron says when the claims were first raised some months ago, he asked the speaker to investigate him.

He says his lawyers will be sending letters to ANC members whom he believes have defamed him.
