KZN storm claims 7 lives

Senior KwaZulu-Natal officials, including the eThekwini mayor, will be visiting several sites across the province to assess the damage caused by storms.

On Tuesday, at least seven people died as a result of flash floods or structural collapses caused by the heavy downpours and strong winds.

Among the victims are a mother and her daughter who were leaving Prince Mshiyeni Hospital when a wall fell over, killing them instantly.

At the same time, the search for a toddler from a pre-school in Umlazi is expected to resume.

KZN government politicians will be visiting various sites across the province to assess the extent of the damage.

The officials are expected to start off at King Edward and Prince Mshiyeni hospitals where some patients were seriously injured or killed.

Some of the MECs will also visit the bereaved family of a toddler who was swept away when their creche in Umlazi, Z Section.

At the same time, a clean-up of the province’s major highways and surrounding areas is expected to get underway on Wednesday.

KwaZulu-Natal emergency services confirmed that a 12-year-old boy drowned while trying to cross a stream in the area of Izingolweni, 40 kilometers from Port Shepstone.

Paramedics said the boy’s body has been recovered and his family has been notified.
