CPUT looks into security guard stabbing

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 14:45 13-09-2017

Protests at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) have quickly escalated as the institution has stated it will use video footage to identify culprits behind the stabbing of a private security guard who was attacked on its Cape Town campus.

CPUT has stated the security official was stabbed and assaulted during violent protests which erupted at the tertiary institution following the suspension of four students due to grave misconduct.

A building was also targeted in an arson attack and authorities on site found themselves having to deal with crude petrol-bombs and other makeshift projectile weapons.

The police and security forces were seen in full riot gear pushing back protesters from the campus buildings.

The institution has kept its doors open to students who are currently busy preparing for course-end projects and end-of-year examinations.

CPUT’s Lauren Kansley says security has been beefed-up.

“This follows a brutal attack on a security guard who was attacked by a group of around 20 protesting students at the Cape Town campus. We believe footage can help us to identify them. The level of violence is concerning.”

Residents in the area and commuters to the CBD have been advised to find alternative routes to avoid potential protest action.
