CPUT ups security after overnight protests

Updated: 09:30 12-09-2017

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has deployed extra security measures after another round of protest action on campus.

Protesting students on Monday torched a building at the Cape Town campus and disrupted several classes.

Rubbish strewn on the road, stones hurled by protesters and a smouldering plastic dustbin bear testament to the volatile situation on campus on Monday.

Police and students squared off. One of the protesters managed to wrestle a shotgun away from a security officer and then stabbed him.

CPUT believes that its security details have the situation under control and spokesperson Lauren Kansley says that the academic programme will go ahead on Tuesday.

“We’re determined to not allow a small group of protesting students to hold our exams and the well-being of the entire student community to ransom.”

Protesters are angry about the suspension of four students accused of misconduct during a council meeting and threatening to burn down campus infrastructure.

They’re also protesting the lack of employment contracts of some support staff.
