Knysna residents urged to curb water usage

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 13:30 17-07-2017

Following massive rebuilding efforts in the Knysna and surrounds, residents have been asked to use water sparingly as level 3 restrictions are still active in the area.

Mayor Eleanore Bouw Spies has urged residents to be mindful of the drought still affecting greater parts of the Western Cape and coastal regions.

“The availability of water continues to be particularly low”, says Bouw Spies. “We are very concerned with the continued impact of the drought”.

The area was devastated by arguably the worst fires in more than 20 years, causing the death of 7 people and the forced evacuation of close to 10 000 people.

Properties, from homes to businesses, were destroyed almost instantly as the coastal town now looks towards its tourism industry to kickstart the economy and get it back on track.

A ‘war-room’ has been established to assess damage to assets and terrain, with a long-term action plan to emerge soon.
