Report: Zuma offered R2bn to step down

Updated: 10:45 16-07-2017

President Jacob Zuma has apparently been offered an amnesty package of R2 billion to step down from office.

The Daily Maverick is reporting that a faction within the African National Congress (ANC), which is backing Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa for the ANC presidency, has offered to raise R2 billion for Zuma in exchange for his cooperation

The agreement could also see the president expunged of any criminal charges.

It’s not clear whether the president is considering the deal but it’s understood he initially dismissed the proposal.

The ANC went into its fifth national policy conference under a cloud of allegations of state capture and continued calls for the president to step down by some party members and veterans.

It’s being reported the precedent for Zuma’s alleged amnesty package originates from a peace settlement that ended the troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1990s.

This would deal would apparently see Zuma R2 billion richer, the over 700 corruption charges against him erased and no jail time.
