Phahlane possibly linked to IPID death threats

Author: Leonardo Angelucci Updated: 11:00 21-04-2017

Reports from the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (Ipid) have emerged detailing that many of their investigators have received death threats from active members of the South African Police Service (Saps).

The report, which follows an affidavit filed in the Pretoria High Court, indicates that acting National Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane could be implicated as well.

Phahlane is currently being investigated by Ipid for allegations that he received money in echange for the awarding of tenders during his tenure as head of Saps forensic services.

While Phahlane’s lawyer maintains that this is not the case, Ipid has stated that the acting head of Saps has not shown the level of cooperation needed to ascertain a smooth investigation.

Speaking on this, the Democratic Alliance (DA) released a statement in which they urged Police Minister Fikile Mbalula to rein the Police Commissioner in.

“If he has nothing to hide, he should have no issue with providing Ipid with the information they require”, expressed the DA.

Meanwhile, the Ipid investigating officer Mandlakayise Mahlangu stated that the threat sender identified himself as the cousin of a person who was being investigated. He added that the message was sent from a cell-phone mast named ‘Police Intelligence Headquarters’.

Phahlane has yet to comment on this situation.
