Updated: 18:30 10-06-2018

Bongumusa Mthembu has won the 93rd edition of the Comrades Marathon with a time of 5:26:35.

The race kicked off at 5:30am at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall with the finish line at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Mthembu finished more than five minutes ahead of his nearest chaser, Joseph Mphuthi with a time of 05:35:14, being welcomed by thousands of fans and supported along the way.

Mthembu won the Comrades Marathon for the first time in 2014 and again in 2017, becoming the second South African to win it twice in a row, since 'Comrades king', Bruce Fordyce. This is his third win.

South Africa's Ann Ashworth won the women's race with a time of 6:10:04. Last year, Camille Herron from the US won the women's edition.

Ashworth, who resides in Johannesburg, is part of the Randburg Harriers Running Club and won the Legends 68km Ultra Marathon in East London in 2017.

The 34-year-old was a favourite going into the Comrades after she placed fifth at the 2018 Two Oceans and came runner-up at the Loskop Marathon.

Following her father’s passing last year, Ashworth dedicates all her races to him.
