Nadal crushes Anderson to win US Open

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 13:30 11-09-2017

Rafael Nadal claimed his 16th Grand Slam title and third US Open after downing South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.

After winning the French Open in June, the world number one has now won two Slams in the same year for the first time since 2013.

Flushing Meadows saw a 6-3 6-3 6-4 Nadal-victory in Sunday's final, saying "It's just unbelievable what happened this year.

"After a couple of years with some troubles, injuries, sometimes playing not good – since the beginning of the season it has been very, very emotional.

“[T]o close the Grand Slam year by winning in New York, I just can say thank you to life for that opportunity and thank you to my team and my family and everybody."

The result means this year's major titles are shared between Nadal, at the French and US Opens, and Roger Federer, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

First-time finalist Anderson was looking to become South Africa’s first Grand Slam champ since Johan Kriek at the 1981 Australian Open, but the Spaniard sealed a dominant win.

"I really want to congratulate Rafa," said Anderson. "I know we're the same age but I feel like I've been watching you my whole life. You've been an idol of mine. It's tough to play you but you're one of the greatest ambassadors for our sport.

"It's been an amazing two weeks. Last year was difficult, it's tough to be injured and the competition is so strong so to come back and make my first final, it's been a really special two weeks. This isn't the result I wanted but I'll keep fighting and I'll be back."

Federer remains at the top of the men's all-time Grand Slam list with 19 titles, three ahead of Nadal, who has now won 10 French titles, three US, two Wimbledon and one Australian.
