Van Niekerk through to 200m final

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 09:15 11-08-2017

Wayde van Niekerk cruised through the 400m final at the IAAF World Championships, sealing a third global title with a time of 43.98 seconds on Tuesday.

The 200m race presented its own challenges for the 400m world-record holder as he managed a third position in the semi-final on Wednesday with a time of 20.28 seconds. This made him the second fastest loser.

He struggled to maintain his usual speed around the bend, which could be because of struggling to gain momentum in the cold. Another possibility could be that he is just physically drained after consecutive races.

Van Niekerk, who has already broken Michael Johnson’s 300m and 400m record, will have to regroup for the final if he wishes to seize the opportunity to complete a first world 200m/400m double since Johnson in 1995.

The final of the men's 200m takes place on Thursday (22:52 SA time).
