Nigerian artist does version of ’This is America’

Updated: 10:00 18-06-2018

If you're a fan of Childish Gambino's This Is America, then you have to see the Nigerian version, titled This Is Nigeria.

This Is Nigeria is almost identical to the American version, which now sits at over 200 million views on YouTube, in the way it was shot and the song's beat.

However, where Childish Gambino speaks specifically to the lived experience of African Americans, This Is Nigeria speaks to the greater Nigerian population of different classes, backgrounds and religions.

The artist behind the song is 27-year-old Falz, real name Folarin Falana, a rapper, actor, and songwriter based in the West African country.

The song contains some obvious and some coded messages about life in Nigeria, including swipes at the government and its promises to revive the Nigerian economy and eradicate corrupt.

A few moments into the music video, Falz is joined by a group of girl dancers, dressed in similar outfits as those worn by the over 200 Chibok girls kidnapped back in 2014 by the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

Falz also raps about classism, religion, crime, addiction, youth unemployment, obsessions with money and fame and is surrounding by scenes depicting each issue.

The video has already gone viral, hitting 1,5 million views on YouTube. Check it out below.
