The Greatest Showman scores 3.5/5

X-Men star Hugh Jackman thrusts his hips and belts out tunes as P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman – a musical that features an A-list cast with the likes of Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson.

The musical film follows the penniless Barnum (Jackman) who opens a freak show circus in hopes of making it a success, so he can provide his wife (Williams) and two daughters a life of comfort and leisure.

Jackman is well-suited to the role, delivering a charismatic performance that not only steals the show, but defines the film as well.

The script penned by Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon ensures the film hits all the right notes, with an energetic paced plot that has enough oomph to entertain the masses.

The only issue is that a fast-paced plot with a big story may result in underdeveloped characters – and that is exactly the case here.

The Greatest Showman also suffers from a predictable third-act that can be overlooked due to the fact that it is quite entertaining.

The glittery sets are eye-catching and gorgeous to look at, while the memorable musical numbers will have audiences tapping their feet constantly. And of course Jackman, Efron and Zendaya will bring hair-rising goosebumps with their incredible vocal abilities.

Verdict: Memorable musical numbers, terrific performances, melodic vocals and downright entertaining; The Greatest Showman plays all the right notes, despite not being that extravaganza we were all hoping for.
