Watch: Trailer for Spielberg’s ’The Post’

Updated: 09:00 18-11-2017

A first trailer for "The Post" — a likely favorite for the 90th Academy Awards — has now beeen released. Based on a true story, the Steven Spielberg thriller recalls one of the biggest and first major scoops in the history of American journalism. The movie stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

At a time when journalists have helped reveal various goings-on (the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal, the Paradise Papers, the Panama Papers etc.), "The Post" seems to arrive at an opportune moment. In fact, Steven Spielberg's movie looks back at one of the American press' first landmark scoops, the Pentagon Papers.

In 1971, the New York Times, followed by the Washington Post, published extracts of a 7,000-page top-secret report that shone light on origins of the Vietnam War, indicating that the USA had deliberately provoked the conflict. When revealed to the public, the documents severely tarnished the American political class of the time.

Behind this major leak were two key figures of US journalism, Katharine Graham — Washington Post publisher and the first female Fortune 500 CEO — and Ben Bradlee, the paper's editor in chief. These roles are played by Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in the movie. The trailer shows the pair working together closely on the affair, while also touching on their doubts and hesitations. In fact, the pair risked their careers as well as their freedom in publishing the story.

"The Post" is slated for limited release in selected US theaters December 22, before going on general release January 12. This strategy ensures eligibility for the 90th edition of the Oscars. Steven Spielberg seems well placed to land a few nominations, largely helped by Oscar-friendly names like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Alison Brie, David Cross and Matthew Rhys are also on the cast.
