Uber drivers avoiding townships after murder

It is becoming more frequent for Uber drivers to refuse pick-ups on their Uber app, avoiding several trips to townships.

According to IOL, an Uber driver was recently killed after picking up two passengers and transporting them to Belhar. He was reportedly shot seven times and died behind the wheel.

In a separate incident, a Congolese driver was shot dead after dropping off passengers who called the transportation service in Bellville. A colleague and friend from DRC said: “The incident scared us all and I am angry.

"We have questions we want answered, as he was a humble person, a well-known and well-liked driver. He didn’t know anyone in Belhar and what is confusing is nothing was stolen. I went to the scene, I saw his lifeless body.”

Another driver emphasized the importance of his family, mentioning that as soon as he finds another job he will stop being an Uber driver. He said: “We need money, but my life and family are more important. It’s not worth it, especially at night. The worst part of this job is when something happens, the company always distances itself, your family doesn’t get anything.”

As these fatalities are ever on the rise, Uber announced new features in October to promote safety and make things easier for driver partners in South Africa. This allows them to choose when, where and how they drive, and including a “No thanks” button.

IOL adds that the “No thanks” button provides drivers with the option of refusing trips without having to worry about how it will affect their earnings. In other words, it allows drivers to decline a trip immediately, rather than wait for the request to time out.

Despite these fatalities, many residents are concerned that there festive planning will be inconvenienced as the influx of Uber drivers using the “No thanks” option increases.
