iPhone 8 will charge in a blast – wirelessly

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 09:31 30-08-2017

The iPhone 8’s wireless charging feature will restore its battery even faster than the iPhone 7’s ‘Lightning’ port, according to an industry insider.

Japanese site Macotakara reports that the upcoming flagship device will feature wireless inductive charging at 7,5W, a whole 2,5W higher than the current industry standard – including the Lightning port.

While this is good news for Apple loyalists, Android fans will be satisfied to know that even with this speed boost, the iPhone 8’s inductive charging will still be slower than current Samsung technology.

In fact, most third-party wireless chargers using the Qi standard are extremely fast. It’s likely, however, that the iPhone 8 will be locked to genuine Apple accessories, so the superfast charging potential will be limited to Android devices for the foreseeable future.

Wireless charging is just one of the new features that’s being added to the latest iPhone incarnation. It’ll also have a near-borderless display, full glass body, facial recognition, and, of course, a faster processor.

The device is expected to land later this year.
