A ’perfect weekend’ for Hamilton

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 11:30 20-07-2017

Lewis Hamilton dominated at Silverstone on Sunday to equal legends Jim Clark and Alain Prost's tally of five British Grand Prix victories. He commented on this feat saying “It has taken me a long time to get there but I am so proud to be up there with the greats.”

He received much criticism this past week after missing an F1 promotional event in London on Wednesday. Although all other drivers attended, Hamilton wished to relax to get himself in the right frame of mind before his Silverstone race. He said: “There is no reason to question my preparations.

“I have more poles than most. I am building up the wins that I have. My performance is second to none.”

Hamilton needed to yield positive results as he started 20 points behind Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel this. After Vettel suffered a front-left tyre failure, Hamilton comfortably cut his deficit to one point because of Vettel’s drop to seventh position. Hamilton responded by saying: “I did not expect to come away only one point behind… Maybe seven or 10 or 12.”

Ferrari seemed to have poor luck as Kimi Raikkonen experienced the same problem. This costed him a second place whereby Valtteri Bottas swooped in to claim the second position with Raikkonen finishing third.

Hamilton was met with an enthusiastic crowd who revelled at his achievement. As he claimed his fourth victory of the year, he was seen surfing on outstretched hands and high-fives all around says BBC Sport.

Hamilton commented on the support he has received from his fans: “The support has been incredible this weekend,” he said.

“It spurs me on and pushes me and that love really inspired me this weekend. Anyone who was here or at home supporting me, I want them to know how grateful I am."

Keen to expand his ever-growing statistical achievements, Hamilton took his 67th pole position. He falls one short of Michael Schumacher's all-time record says BBC Sport.
