Valtteri Bottas sped to outpace Lewis Hamilton by 0.078sec. Bottas was the fastest driver in opening practice session for the British Grand Prix and set a new lap record at the Silverstone circuit. He clocked a best lap of one minute and 29.942 seconds says AFP.

As the Mercedes team dominated, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed third place, whereas teammate Daniel Ricciardo claimed fourth.

Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull, 0.498secs off the pace ahead of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo who reached 0.338secs.

Ferrari drivers’, Kimi Raikkonen took fifth and Sebastian Vettel, sixth.

With grey skies prevailing, BBC Sport reports that Mercedes' advantage on this circuit related to setting their fastest times on the soft tyre.

Bottas maintained a good start as Hamilton, Red Bull and Ferrari could not pick up the pace.

Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat reached seventh place whereas Fernando Alonso was eighth for McLaren. Alonso is aware that he will have at least a five-place grid penalty by using too many engine parts BBC Sport mentions.

Felipe Massa stood in ninth position for Williams with McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne in tenth.

AFP concludes: “It was not long before the 2016 pole lap time was beaten, sure evidence of the speed of this year's new era fatter and faster cars on one of the quickest circuits.”
