Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 11:45 05-12-2017

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos broke a La Liga record for red cards after being sent off on Saturday.

He was shown a second yellow card in the 86th minute against Athletic Bilbao after committing a foul against Aritz Aduriz.

According to SoccerLaduma, he has now been sent off more times than any player in Spanish top flight history; 19th in the league. The defender surpasses the record by Pablo Alfaro and Xavi Aguado who were both dismissed 18 times.

Skysports adds that this was the “24th red card of his career, which is twice as many as any other Real Madrid player in history.” Fernando Hierro stands closest with a mere 12 red cards.
