Sad farewell for Italy legend Buffon

Disbelief overcame football enthusiasts as Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 60 years.

Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon shared these sentiments as he bid a tearful farewell to his international career in a World Cup playoff exit against Sweden at Milan's San Siro stadium.

Much to the dismay of Buffon, Italy were held to a 0-0 draw and ended 1-0 on aggregate.

The 39-year-old goal-keeper represented Italy for the past 20 years, and was part of the team to claim the Word Cup title in 2006. In addition, he earned a record 175 appearances.

A disappointed Buffon said: "I'm not sorry for myself but all of Italian football.

"We failed at something which also means something on a social level. There's regret at finishing like that, not because time passes."

It then comes as no surprise that he remains the only goalkeeper to win the UEFA player of the year award.

According to AFP, the Juventus captain has mentioned that he is likely to retire from all football at the end of the season. He added that Italy fans will still have much to look forward to with AC Milan's 18-year-old keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma set to take the international number one shirt.

"There is certainly a future for Italian football, as we have pride, ability, determination and after bad tumbles, we always find a way to get back on our feet," he said.

"I leave a squad of talent that will have their say”.
