Benni McCarthy off to winning start

Updated: 09:15 13-08-2017

Benni McCarthy got his tenure as a head coach off to a winning start as Cape Town City beat Polokwane City 1-0 in a MTN8 quarter-final tie in the Mother City on Saturday.

Despite an own goal by Polokwane City’s defender Sibusiso Mbonani, separating the two sides in end, City were deserved victors having been the better side for long periods of the match.

City were dealt a blow with high-profile signing Teko Modise pulling out of the starting line-up, which meant City were without a natural play-maker in the midfield.

Modise’s replacement Thabo Nodada showcased endeavour and energy in the middle of the park alongside eventual man of the match Roland Putsche. The tireless work in the middle helped City to a firm grip on proceedings throughout the match.

Bernard Molekwa’s side had good chances of their own, especially Puleng Tlolane. But he was thwarted by an inform Shu-Aib Walters and City back four, where centre back Robyn Johannes stood out.

City also missed an array of chances, striker Lehlohonolo Majoro the main culprit. He found himself in great positions but could not beat George Chigova in goal, McCarthy sympathised with the striker post match.

McCarthy was relieved after the final whistle, saying the win was the most important objective. City now move into the draw for the semi-finals.
