Juve in, Barca out

Author: Micayla Vellai Updated: 14:30 20-04-2017

Attack after attack leads to no result as Barcelona crash out of the Champions league quarter finals. The two European power houses were not only playing to win, but also for reputation, history and legacy. On a night filled with hope, Barcelona played spectacular football except for the fact that they couldn’t pull through and deliver.

At a time when Barcelona needed to four goals to advance to the semi-finals, even Messi could not put the ball in the net. The absence of goals leads to one disbelieving that Barcelona played as good as they did, but they fought a good fight until the end. The crowd however roared for free kicks that were simply not granted. After the unfair red card of Vidal and Ronaldo’s offside goals in the Real-Bayern game, one cannot help but contemplate the decisions the referees make and how they play a role in the final score of the match.

Barca manager Luis Enrique pushed for his team to score five goals and pull off another miracle as they did with their PSG game. But everybody wondered if this was too high of an ambition for even a team like Barcelona.

More surprisingly was the fact that Juventus continuously tried to go on the counter attack to put the final nail in the coffin. Besides trying to attack, they also performed well on the defence as the little space that was offered to Barca to score was soon closed.

This well rounded game by Juventus makes them one of the main contenders to lift the Champions League cup. They offer both threat on attack as well as standing firm in defence.  With a 0-0 score and a 3-0 aggregate in favour of Juve, we are able to see that anything is possible in the UEFA League.
