SANParks: SA National Parks Week a success

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 01:16 21-10-2017

SANParks says that the 2017 South African National Parks week was a major success, with more than 77 000 people visiting parks between the 18th and 22nd of September.

With an increase of 24% year-on-year, the event introduced our immense biodiversity and natural beauty to more South Africans than ever.

“It was good to see smaller parks such as Tankwa Karoo and Bontebok National Park have an increase in their numbers compared to previous years,” says SANParks CEO Fundisile Mketeni. “When people start to take pride in the national parks, then we believe that they will start to understand the importance of conservation.”

The initiative started back in 2006, granting all SA citizens with valid ID documents free access to all but one of the 19 national parks spread around the country.

Each park also hosted activities throughout the week, in an attempt to spread conservation awareness and get people to know their national parks better.

If you missed out this year, don’t worry – the annual event will make its return next September. In the meantime, you can still visit any of the parks for a small conservation fee.
