Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 11:32 10-01-2018

The Proteas wrapped up the 1st test match of the year against India yesterday with a 72 run lead. Vernon Philander secured a career best and sealed the victory for the South African team.

Despite South Africa losing one day of the test match, South Africa managed to secure a victory. Dale Steyn’s unfortunate retirement of the entire match kept the South African players on their toes. The team managed to band together and fight as a team despite this; showing true finesse.

The fourth day alone featured 18 wickets and six of them went to Vernon Philander – a best in his career. The all-rounder has a remarkable track record in test cricket history, reaching 50 wickets in only seven matches – the fastest in test cricket history. However, managed to secure a personal best yesterday at the Newlands Cricket Ground.

A successful chase had looked possible for India when captain Virat Kohli was at the crease but was trapped by Philander for 28 to leave the at 71-4. Philander bowled 13 balls to Kohli over two spells; all of them pitched outside off, not one was full enough to drive or short enough to cut.

It was a proud victory for South African supporters at Newlands Cricket Ground yesterday and a solemn one for the many Indian supporters who came out.

The second Test in Centurion starts on 13 January.
