Rain dampens Proteas’ fire

Author: Micayla Vellai Updated: 11:30 08-08-2017

South Africa has been on the back foot for most of the final test, needing to win to tie the four match series.  England batted first and obtained 362 runs with Jonny Bairstow scoring 99 runs, and Kagiso Rabada taking 4 wickets for 91 runs in 26 overs.

The Proteas response to this was dismal as they could only manage 226 runs with Themba Bavuma scoring only 46 runs.

England came back with their second innings scoring 243 all out with Morkel taking 4 wickets for 41 runs, setting South Africa to a total of 380 runs to win. Just as the South African openers came out to bat, the rain started falling down.

But who will the rain be in favour of?

South Africa has not performed that well with the bat in hand as the England tour comes to an end. With the need to win, it could be assumed that they rather would settle for the draw in this match, failing to have shown signs of being able to beat England. The rain could make this more difficult as it has been proven that the ball swings more during cold weather. Will South Africa fall to defeat or will they rise up and exemplify their slogan “Protea fire”?
