Huawei now world’s 2nd-largest smartphone maker

Author: Staff Reporter Updated: 10:01 08-09-2017

Chinese tech company Huawei has finally surpassed Apple as the world’s second-largest smartphone brand, out-selling the American brand in June and July.

According to research firm Counterpoint, August is looking just as strong for the company. “This is a significant milestone for Huawei,” says Counterpoint’s Peter Richardson. “It speaks volumes for this primarily network infrastructure vendor on how far it has grown in the consumer mobile handset space in the last three to four years.”

Richardson attributes the massive growth to the company’s intense and consistent investment in research, development and manufacturing. He adds that Huawei has also taken an aggressive approach to marketing and sales channel expansion.

He does, however, note that Apple may soon retake its lead, considering the imminent launch of the iPhone 8. Huawei will need to consolidate its position in South Asia, India and North America to maintain its ranking.

Samsung currently holds the top spot, and will continue to do so for a while yet, considering its massive global presence.
