WhatsApp aims to become business-friendly

Updated: 15:46 06-09-2017

WhatsApp is going beyond simple instant messaging by aiming to become a full-blown business platform.

According to the company, there is already a significant business presence using the instant messenger to connect with customers. Now, it wants to formalise this interaction with new “tools”.

“We've heard stories of shopkeepers who use WhatsApp to stay in touch with hundreds of customers from a single smartphone, and from people who are unsure about whether or not a business on WhatsApp is authentic,” the company says.

“In the coming months, we'll be testing new features that aim to solve some of these challenges, and make it easier for people to communicate with the businesses they want to reach on WhatsApp.”

The company has previously announced the new ‘verified profile’ feature, which will place a green tick next to the names of genuine businesses on WhatsApp.

It’s planning to cater for both small startups and large, multi-national enterprises, with features that’ll allow them to send out things like delivery confirmations and even flight times.

WhatsApp is, of course, owned and controlled by Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, a company that has extensive experience creating a social platform for businesses.
