WATCH: Hyperloop One performs successful test

Author: Mikail Baker Updated: 10:16 14-07-2017

For the first time since the Wright brothers took to the air more than one hundred years ago, an entirely new mode of transportation has successfully been put to the test.

That’s right – Hyperloop One says that on the 12th of May, it successfully tested the controlled propulsion and levitation of a hyperloop vehicle in a vacuum.

For a whole three seconds, its XP-1 pod glided through a section of the company’s 487,6-metre-long test tube track out in the middle of the Nevada desert.

“In the early morning hours of May 12, a few dozen Hyperloop One engineers and execs squeezed into a makeshift control room in a trailer under the stars in the Nevada desert to watch transportation history in the making,” says a statement by the company’s co-founders, Josh Giegel and Shervin Pishevar.

“Ever since we started the company three years ago, we've been aimed at this moment.”

The successful test is a monumental milestone in global transport technology, proving that Elon Musk’s hyperloop concept is more than a whimsical vision for the future. It’s now a reality.

Giegel and Pishevar are genuine pioneers, and their team will change the world in coming years. If all goes well, you’ll be able to travel from Edinburgh to London within a mere 50 minutes, or Madrid to Tangier in Morocco in just 47.

“History is made by people, not events, by hard work and persistence, and not by chance,” say the founders. “Close to 200 Hyperloop One engineers, machinists, welders and fabricators collaborate to accomplish our Kitty Hawk moment. It was their determination that made the previously impossible possible.”

The statement also unveils the XP-1 pod, the vehicle Hyperloop One plans to use in full tests. Looking somewhat like a rounded bus, the carbon fibre and aluminium capsule will achieve speeds of up to 402km/h.
